Sicily is in the spot light thanks to the 2009 FIE Congress (Fèdèration Internationale d'Escrime) that will be held in Palermo on November 21-22, 2009. This is an extraordinarily important event for fencing at a worldwide level and this meeting will gather Presidents and Delegates of national Federations from 134 nations in the regional capital. FIE, which was founded in 1913 and based in Lausanne, organises its World Congress every two years. After Madrid, which hosted the 2007 FIE Congress, FIE decided to organise again a Congress in Italy after 40 years and this is the first time for Sicily to host the Congress. On Sunday November 22nd – the second day of the Congress that will be held at San Paolo Palace Hotel in Palermo – the city hosting the 2011 Senior World Fencing Championships will be selected by vote among the three candidate cities: Budapest (Hungary), Tianjin (China) and Catania (Italy). The international Sabre Trophy “Memorial Calarese” will be held on Saturday 21 November at the Teatro Politeama in Palermo, parallel to the FIE World Congress. The international trophy will see the participation of eight sabreurs among the best sabre fencers in the world.
