In order to capitalize rather than disperse the enormous wealth of experience gained during the "Acireale 2008”Junior and Cadet World Championships, the Sicilian Regional Committee of the Italian Fencing Federation – in synergy with CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee), the Sicilian Region, the Department of Tourism, Transport and Communications – has drawn up an ambitious project called "SiciliaScherma 2009/2010", which involves organising three major fencing events of national and international significance and backing the City of Catania's bid to host the Senior World Fencing Championships in 2011. The key events planned are the F.I.E. World Congress to be held on 21/22 November in Palermo, the International Saber Trophy "Calarese Memorial" in conjunction with the F.I.E. Congress, and the Italian Senior Fencing Championships to be held in Syracuse in 2010. The project also involves extensive communications with other locations. As mentioned above, the objective is therefore to organise important fencing events and thus to provide Italy (Catania) with an effective promotional campaign in support of their bid to host the 2011 Senior World Fencing Championships. The idea is "to take advantage of" this opportunity. Hosting a great event is indeed a unique occasion to show Sicily directly to visitors, providing positive feedback on the perception of tourists and also breaking down old stereotypes and preconceptions. The project therefore aims to strengthen the competitiveness of the tourist industry in Sicily by expanding, upgrading and diversifying tourism, as well as enhancing productive investment in the sector of tourism.
